Stressed when spelled backward is desserts! Is it a coincidence that one of the most unloved words equate to something that most of us love? Who could resist eating ice cream, cakes, and chocolates?
How Does Eating Desserts Relieve Stress?
“In research conducted only in the last few decades, scientists have discovered that the gut releases a hormone when you eat food that helps regulate the levels of sugar in your blood and slows down the emptying of your stomach.” William Anderson LMHC said. Studies show that eating desserts or sweets decreases the production of glucocorticoid, a type of cortisol or the stress hormone. When we are feeling stressed, the region in our brain called hypothalamus signals that the adrenal glands released glucocorticoids. In response to this, our body reacts accordingly such as activating energy from storage namely the pancreas. It increases cardiovascular tone and delays other essential processes in the body such as digestion, growth, and reproduction.
If our body is always dealing with the effects of cortisol, it affects the organs in our body and weakens our immune system, making us prone to illnesses. That is the reason why stress plays a significant role in developing health problems such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. As per studies conducted by experts, among the secrets to longevity is living life without stress.
What Are Desserts?
Dessert is a sweet course or dish devoured after eating a meal namely breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, we usually serve them during the evening meal. They can be in the form of any sweets such as ice cream, cake, chocolate, or candies. We can also opt for healthy desserts by eating fruits.
Desserts That Relieve Stress:
Ice cream is a form of frozen dessert that has different flavors inspired by other foods particularly chocolate and fruits. The coldness of the ice cream adds to our feeling of comfort, especially when the temperature is hot. Some of the sought-after flavors of ice cream are chocolate, vanilla, rocky road, cookies and cream, mango, and strawberry. Who wouldn’t feel good after eating a scoop of a frozen delight?
A cake is another form of dessert prepared by way of baking in an oven and usually has an icing. We often have it during parties, particularly birthdays where one would blow a candle on it. Nowadays, there are many remarkable ways to make cakes, and there are varieties of designs and flavors such as chocolate, mocha, vanilla, and strawberry. They could also either be moist or chiffon.
“In the case of dark chocolate, it was particularly powerful. People consuming dark chocolate reduced the risk of depression or had a 70% lower risk of looking depressed on the scales that they used,” says Scott Bea, PsyD. Chocolate is a dessert which is typically brown and is from a plant called the cacao. Eating chocolates dated back a hundred years ago, and today, chocolate production is one of the most successful industries worldwide. All countries have their particular way of making them, and among the names of tempting chocolates are Cadbury, Ferrero Rocher, Vosges Haut-Chocolat, and Lindt & Sprungli.
Fruits are the healthiest form of dessert since they are all natural. However, there are studies which show eating them before a meal is a perfect time to consume them. It is during this time that the body could absorb the nutrients right away. The taste of fruits varies, but we all love them sweet. Among our favorite fruits are apples, oranges, grapes, mangoes, peaches, and avocados.
Stress is inevitable and is already a part of life, but that doesn’t mean we have to endure its harmful effects wholeheartedly. As Gretchen Flores, MA LPC LCPC explains, “Some stress is unavoidable but if you can keep perspective then it can be a whole lot easier.” After all, we can have desserts which would help us feel comfortable when we feel all pressured and burned out. Stressed is desserts when spelled backward. Maybe this should give us a hint.
